Abdominoplasty represents a surgical procedure that significantly improves the contour of the abdomen and waist by removing excess skin and fat tissue, but also by reinforcing the abdominal muscle wall. When diet and exercise fail to result in the desired appearance, this procedure gives the appearance of a flat and more attractive stomach, leading to increased self-confidence (whether it be a man patient or a woman who failed to return to her previous appearance after a pregnancy).
Before this procedure it is recommended to perform an ultrasound of the abdominal wall that could highlight possible hernias or abdominal separations (diastasis recti). All these anomalies have therapeutic sanction and there are cases when it is necessary to collaborate with a general surgeon during the same surgery.
A recovery period post abdominoplasty is required to ensure that healing goes well and safely.
Immediately after – dressing the suture areas. External elastic contentions (corset, tall underwear or waistband) are also used. Analgesics and muscle relaxers are recommended; drain tubes are usually removed after 24-48 hours.
The first week – patients can return to work and can perform easy tasks. Exercise and lifting weights are to be avoided. The bruises and swellings begin to slowly disappear.
2 weeks postoperatively – continuous remission bruises and edema; exercise and lifting weights still to be avoided.
4-6 weeks – results of the surgery starting to reveal; patients can return to normal activities
6 months – complete remission of any bruising or swelling; the end result is obvious.
